Let’s Stop Swimming Upstream

“I’m not going to sacrifice my mental health to have the perfect body.” ~Demi Lovato

Have you ever felt as if you really are driving yourself crazy with worry over what your body looks like? I certainly have and it’s NOT a good feeling. If we are turning to our bodies to find a commercialized form of perfection, we are going to be let down every time because the type of “perfect body” we see in ads and on television doesn’t really exist! So why or why do we let ourselves use it as a measuring stick? Talk about living our lives swimming upstream! That’s a painful way to live! What would happen if we shifted our energy toward recognizing all the amazing qualities of our bodies instead? It’s not our bodies that need changing, friends…..it’s our definition of perfection.

Our bodies are the greatest gift we could have been given on this earth. Taking care of ourselves extends way past eating healthy foods and exercising. Changing our perspective to truly respect and love our bodies is just as important. Often we think…”I WILL love my body, when it’s thinner.” Or “I’ll love my body when it’s more fit.” But that’s soooo backwards! That’s like telling our kids we will love them when they start acting the way WE want them to! I’m talking about UNCONDITIONAL love for ourselves….just like the kind we extend to others most dear to us.

Loving our bodies can feel quite uncomfortable at first but that’s only because for many of us, we have never done it! An easy way to start is to make a list of all the things that are most important to you and then think about how your body has helped bring these things to your life. The arms you hug your family with, the legs and feet that carry you every where you want to go, the stomach that housed your babies for 9+ months. Keep going and allow yourself to dig deep in this mental exercise. Once we start to really notice everything our bodies do for us, we quickly realize how much we take them for granted. No matter what size or shape, there are dozens of reasons to love and cherish the miracle of having this body we were given. In the process of awakening to this truth, we start see ourselves in a new light and wow, does it feel good! SO much better than the old, negative, critical way of seeing ourselves. Living in the flow of gratitude for what we do have ALWAYS feels amazing! So let’s do it!
